Get the Most Out of Your Next Leadership Investment

Leadership development has greater impact and results when organizations provide leaders with access to resources after a learning event. A best practice to ensure the business success of your next leadership development program is to have a strategy in place to offer attendees a follow-up plan.

After you’ve implemented the research-based The Leadership Challenge® Workshop, you’ll undoubtedly find your participants energized and motivated to become better leaders and to accomplish extraordinary things. Leaders are back on-the-job, making the effort to follow through on their leadership commitments.

As time passes, you don’t want to lose this level of commitment. But how do you continue to energize and motivate your leaders to stay accountable to their leadership goals? How do you continue the learning post-workshop?

At FlashPoint Leadership Consulting, we recently developed a four-part plan to help a client make sure they had the resources to create leadership change after the workshop ends. The plan begins with a variety of low-to-no cost options and moves toward supplemental programs with an added investment. Part 1 in this series we will be sharing with The Leadership Challenge Community focuses on no-cost resources for reinforcement.

Four No-Cost Options to Sustain Learning and Create Lasting Organizational Impact with The Leadership Challenge
  1. The LPI®: Leadership Practices Inventory® Workbook and Development Planner 
    Complimentary with the purchase of the LPI® 360 Online license, each participant has access to a PDF version of the LPI Workbook, which contains 10 very specific steps to understanding and using the LPI feedback. The development planner (PDF) contains 10 tips for becoming a better leader, specific and actionable suggestions for improving in each of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®, discussion on how people learn to lead, and several leadership development worksheets and activities. 

  2. Why use these resources?
    The workbook and development planner help leaders further interpret their LPI results and understand how to use the information to become more effective in their leadership roles. Featuring the latest research and more than 140 actionable tips and suggestions, the workbook helps leaders create personal action plans and take the right steps to get results. 

  3. The Leadership Challenge® Practice Book
    Also included with the LPI 360 Online license is The Leadership Challenge Practice Book, which presents daily practice routines and activities to help leaders become more effective by increasing the frequency with which they exhibit The Five Practices. The book’s five sections offer a different LPI behavior focus and supporting practice activities. It also includes quick progress checklists called “Make It a Daily Habit” to help participants keep track of their progress on action items set during the workshop. 

  4. Why use this resource?
    If leaders truly want to improve their skills they need to study their own behavior, becoming more conscious of their leadership choices and how they act on their intentions. With daily practice routines and activities around each of The Five Practices and their corresponding behaviors, leaders can focus specifically on areas they feel need improvement. 

  5. Values Cards Direct Report Activity
    During the workshop, each participant receives a deck of Values Cards. This activity is intended to help leaders facilitate a discussion with their teams on how individual values connect to the organization’s values. During the exercise, leaders share their personal values with their teams and then use the values card deck to explore team members’ individual values. 

  6. Why use this resource?
    As authors Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner explain, the best leaders are those who have a clear understanding of their personal values. The values cards are an excellent tool for learning and conceptualizing the importance of values reflection in leadership. Leaders should also be encouraged to implement these activities among their teams to create a strong foundation through shared values. 

  7. Leadership Tools and Resources
    Periodically share articles, blogs, white papers, and webinars about leadership with your leaders and team. 

  8. Why use these resources?
    Staying current on up-to-date leadership trends and behaviors is vital. The thirst for knowledge shouldn’t end at the close of the workshop. There are plenty of free online resources to help leaders continue to develop. These include white papers, case studies, blog articles, and webinars. By routinely sharing these tools and resources with your leaders leadership is kept in the forefront, reinforcing the importance of following through on leadership development goals.
