Envisioning the future to achieve the extraordinary at The Leadership Challenge Forum 2013

“What differentiates a credible person from a credible leader is that leaders have a point of view.” And with that succinct clarity, Barry Posner opened the recently concluded Leadership Challenge Forum 2013 in the welcoming Four Seasons Resort in Scottsdale. Amid the breathtaking beauty of the Pinnacle Mountains, nearly 200 eager learners came together to explore, define, and articulate a collective vision for the future of leadership and for our own practice as leaders.

Opening with the first-ever Vision Workshop, Barry and Jim Kouzes facilitated a powerful, interactive experience that truly set the stage for the next two days—48 hours jam packed with case study, activity, and skill-building breakout sessions, plenty of community building, networking opportunities, and two truly memorable keynotes that seamlessly connected all the ways in which to envision the future: reflect on your past, attend to the present, prospect the future, and feel your passion.

With acclaimed photojournalist Steve Uzzell, for example, we traveled the open road through a series of stunning photographs that helped open our minds to the various ways we can renew, refresh, and restore our vision. Along the way, Steve shared insights from his experience as a photographer and inspirational speaker as he challenged us to clarify our own images of leadership and to nurture that clarifying skill in those we train and lead. And he reminded us all that “Knowing where you want to end up lets you know where you need to start.”

Truly a model of the notion that “leaders believe they are here for something to do”, influential activist, author, and co-founder of Vital Voices Global Partnership Alyse Nelson took the stage to take us on an even more global—yet equally awe-inspiring—journey to explore how brave and visionary women around the world are living The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® as they risk everything to promote change and improve the lives of others.  As our world becomes more connected and nations around the world work to define visions for progress, Alyse and the stories of Vital Voices provided inspiration to consider new ways to tap into everyone’s full potential, to fuel both economic growth and a new model of leadership.

Even more inspiration and learning is in store for 2014. Plans are already underway for New Orleans, June 19 – 20, 2014. So mark your calendar and plan to join us at Forum 2014!   Keep in touch as program details are finalized.
