Q: In my consulting work, I tend to serve clients from one specific industry. I would like to use The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® model in my work, but how do I respond to clients who claim that "it won't work in my industry"?
A: As you know, with nearly 30 years of research and study we have seen The Five Practices in action in virtually every industry, at every level, in every organizational setting: nonprofits and for-profits, government and manufacturing, academia and healthcare, faith-based and community advocacy groups. And throughout Jim and Barry's book, The Leadership Challenge, they have featured hundreds of personal stories and detailed case examples of individuals in all of these various workplace settings who have achieved greater effectiveness in their roles as leaders.
In addition, a series of special articles has just been released—The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®—to help consultants like you introduce the core concepts and practices of The Leadership Challenge to aspiring leaders unfamiliar with the model. Each 24-page publication highlights how The Five Practices are proving effective in helping aspiring leaders address unique industry-specific challenges to leadership. Individual articles are available that focus on the following industries: Financial Services, Government/Public Sector, Healthcare Administration, Nursing, and Nonprofit.
These articles are ideal for leaders with limited time and budget, or to orient attendees at the beginning of a workshop or coaching session. Each provides a concise overview of Kouzes and Posner's model, two Leadership Challenge case studies drawn from the particular industry profiled, and plenty of examples of how other industry-specific leaders have created vision-driven cultures using the model to increase employee engagement and sustain high-performing teams. A short description of The Five Practices, a section on "Learning to Lead", and background information on the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) also are included.
A completely revised and updated 2nd edition of the original The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® article also has just been published. And a Special Enhanced Edition of this article includes two mini-documentary style videos profiling exemplary leaders, with candid interviews and real-life footage filmed in the workplace.
