Q: When working with a group of contributors, how can I use the LPI® to improve the team’s overall leadership competencies, in addition to individual team members?

 

A: While the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) was designed and is most commonly used as an individual feedback tool, the ability to look at the scores across a group of leaders or even an entire organization can be helpful in some situations.  Among the various LPI reporting tools available, the LPI Group Summary Report is one that provides a snapshot of multiple leaders’ data.

 

Given this broader picture of leader behavior, the group or organization as a whole can see strengths and areas for improvement, and consider how they might move forward on team-wide or organization-wide initiatives. Depending on the situation, you can administer and debrief the Group Summary Report before leaders receive their individual LPI Feedback Reports, after the LPI Feedback Session, or not at all.

 

Many companies have used Custom Group LPI reports quite effectively to document marked change in leadership behaviors. These LPI Group reports—e.g., Group Percentile Ranking Graph and Group Leadership Behaviors Ranking Analysis—can objectively and quantifiably demonstrate the impact of changes in the leadership behaviors of individuals, of individual teams within an organization, or in the organization as a whole.
